Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty or eyelid plastic surgery is aimed at patients who want to correct bags and droopy eyelids. The procedure allows for the removal of fat and excess muscle and skin from the upper and lower eyelids to eliminate that unaesthetic appearance of tired-looking eyes. After undergoing surgery, the patient will notice a clearer gaze and a rejuvenated appearance.

The First Consultation

During the first consultation, a general evaluation of your health status will be conducted, as well as an examination of your eyelids. In this consultation, we will discuss the need for upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both.

The necessary surgical techniques for your specific case will be explained, and a series of photographs will be taken for the planning of your surgery.

You should be as honest as possible and clearly express your expectations and concerns.

Surgery and Anesthesia

Blepharoplasty is an OUTPATIENT procedure performed with local anesthesia and does NOT require hospitalization. However, there are more nervous individuals who, in addition to local anesthesia, require anesthetic sedation. Depending on the type of blepharoplasty needed, the duration of the surgery usually ranges from one to two hours.

Blepharoplasty involves the removal of excess skin-muscle and fat bags from the upper and lower eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty primarily involves the removal of excess skin-muscle from the upper eyelid, correcting its droopiness and the appearance of a sad or tired eye. Lower blepharoplasty involves the removal of fat bags, which can be done through two approaches: the transcutaneous route (through the skin), used when there is also excess skin to correct, and the transconjunctival route (inside the eyelid), used when we want to exclusively remove the fat bags from the lower eyelid.

Postoperative Care

Blepharoplasty is not a painful procedure; most patients complain of a feeling of tightness at the outer corners of the eyes, which is easily manageable with usual analgesics.

A sensation of a foreign body or stinging in the eye may occur, usually lasting about 48-72 hours, due to the incision made for the removal of the lower eyelid bags.
